Automated Model-Based Localization of Marine Mammals near California

چکیده
In previous work, we developed an algorithm for acoustically tracking singing humpback whales near Hawaii. Pair-wise time-differences in arrival of whale calls as measured by a phase-only correlation process are compared to time-lags predicted by an acoustic propagation model. Differences between measured and modeled time-lags defined an ambiguity surface that identifies the most probable whale location in a horizontal plane around an array. In this work, we describe the application of this technique to a very different environmental scenario involving blue whales off the coast of California. The whale calls are much lower in frequency and the receivers are ocean bottom seismometers. Again the algorithm performs extremely well, providing the capability for real-time, automated monitoring and alert.

A Robust Model-based Algorithm for Localizing Marine Mammal Transients
Given the increasing interest in the effects of sound on marine mammals, a new modelbased algorithm for localizing transient noises around a sparse, widely-distributed array of receivers has been developed and tested with real acoustic data. The robustness of the algorithm is illustrated in its application to two different scenarios with equal success: localizing humpback whales near Hawaii and...

Research in passive acoustic detection and localization of marine mammals has largely focused on isolated cases of single or few individuals. However, many marine mammals, such as dolphins, characteristically aggregate in large pods. In addition, dolphins vocalize frequently, emitting broadband clicks and frequency-modulated whistles, which, coupled with a large number of individuals, further c...

Humpback whale songs were recorded on six widely spaced receivers of the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) hydrophone network near Hawaii during March of 2001. These recordings were used to test a new approach to localizing the whales that exploits the time-difference of arrival (time lag) of their calls as measured between receiver pairs in the PMRF network. The usual technique for estimat...
متن کاملEFPC: An Environmentally Friendly Power Control Scheme for Underwater Sensor Networks
In oceans, the limited acoustic spectrum resource is heavily shared by marine mammals and manmade systems including underwater sensor networks. In order to limit the negative impact of acoustic signal on marine mammals, we propose an environmentally friendly power control (EFPC) scheme for underwater sensor networks. EFPC allocates transmission power of sensor nodes with a consideration of the ...
